About the role
The Commercial Analyst – Inventory plays a key role in supporting profitable growth by optimising inventory performance within the business. Working closely with Sales and Commercial teams, the role ensures stock levels across physical and virtual warehouses are aligned with sales activity, product lifecycle stages, and commercial priorities.
Through analysis, reporting, and collaboration with stakeholders, this role helps the business minimise aged and excess stock, protect cash flow, and reduce the risk of write-offs and obsolescence, ensuring inventory decisions support the best possible commercial outcomes.
Key duties and responsibilities are:
Inventory Management
- Set, monitor, and maintain optimal inventory levels in line with sales activity and commercial priorities.
- Analyse historical sales trends, seasonality, product lifecycle, promotions, and market conditions to inform inventory planning.
- Regularly review buffer stock levels to optimise cash flow and minimise storage costs.
- Ensure stock allocation supports the best commercial outcomes across the business.
- Monitor inventory turnover rates and work to reduce slow-moving stock and minimise risk of writedowns or write-offs.
- Review stock held in alternative or virtual warehouses to ensure appropriate rotation and cost alignment.
Aged Stock Management
- Conduct root cause analysis for aged or excess inventory and develop strategies to prevent recurrence.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to manage exit strategies for problematic stock.
- Support stock writedowns where required, ensuring appropriate documentation and approvals.
Virtual Warehouse Management
- Collaborate with relevant teams to manage inventory levels within virtual warehouses.
- Ensure virtual warehouse stock aligns with product lifecycle stages and business risk tolerance.
- Monitor and optimise virtual inventory allocation to minimise potential financial impact from obsolete or end-of-life (EOL) stock.
Inventory Reporting
- Produce monthly inventory and working capital reports for the Commercial Operations Manager, highlighting risks and opportunities.
- Provide actionable insights to Sales, Commercial, and Product teams to improve inventory access, turnover, and cash flow.
- Support ad-hoc analysis and scenario planning for commercial initiatives affecting inventory levels.
Education, Skills & Experience
- Strong analytical skills with experience in inventory planning, reporting, and performance management.
- Proficient in ERP or commercial systems for inventory and data management.
- High attention to detail and accuracy, particularly in data analysis and reporting.
- Ability to collaborate across commercial, sales, and product teams.
- Understanding of inventory lifecycle, working capital impact, and commercial drivers.
- Problem-solving mindset and process-oriented approach.
